- The collection consists of papers of Clark S. Wortley from 1860-1921. The papers include wartime letters generally of a personal nature written to Wortley by his sister and members of his regiment; official Army papers (including many of Wortley's records as quartermaster of the 20th Michigan Infantry Regiment); and miscellaneous materials (clippings, photographs, printed matter, and a collection of ribbons and rosters associated with veteran's activities of the 20th Michigan Infantry Regiment). Also filed with miscellaneous materials is Wortley's diary (April 1, 1864- March 25, 1865), which includes brief descriptions of his regiment's participation in the Petersburg, Cold Harbor, and Spotsylvania campaigns.

- Biographical/Historical Note:
- Clark S. Wortley (b. 1841) was born in England. The Wortley family lived in Ypsilanti, Michigan at the time of the Civil War. Clark Wortley entered the Union Army on August 4, 1862, and was assigned to Company K of the 20th Michigan Infantry Regiment. He served first as sergeant major, and later as second and first lieutenant of his company. He was commissioned as quartermaster of the 20th Michigan in September, 1864. The regiment saw service mainly in Virginia and Tennessee, with the Armies of the Cumberland, the Potomac and the Mississippi. Wortley was mustered out of the service in May, 1865, and thereafter remained active in veteran's activities.
