- Biographical/Historical Note:
- The Second World War had a number of effects on the Emory University community. In 1941 at the students' request, the University changed its academic schedule to offer Saturday classes, allowing students to save time for a vacation before being drafted. The University also began to offer classes on war-related topics such as military law and chemical warfare. Additionally, the Emory community contributed doctors, nurses, and medical training to the war effort. The Emory Unit, also known as the 43rd General Hospital, which first served in France during the First World War, reformed in 1942 and served in Algeria and France until 1945. Emory was also home to a Navy college training program called V-12 for the pre-training of physicians until 1945. In April of 1945, a military transport ship was christened the M.S. Emory Victory in honor of Emory University's service during the war. The ship's bell was given to the University after it was decommissioned in 1964.
