- The E. Brooks Holifield Papers contain over four decades of scholarly communication, article drafts, lecture notes, pedagogical materials, administrative records, and research data on topics including theology, culture, and the clergy in American religious history. The collection is organized alphabetically into five series.
Series 1: Correspondence (arranged both alphabetically and chronologically by folder title) These files include letters to and from students, general professional correspondence, manuscript suggestions from colleagues, collaborative administrative communication, and dissertation dialogue with graduate students. Folders containing student information are restricted.
Series 2: Course Work (arranged alphabetically by folder title) These records contain course syllabi, final exams, lecture notes, student responses, and grading materials for courses taught at both Yale and Emory. The folder containing student responses is restricted.
Series 3: Lectures (arranged alphabetically by folder title) These contents include notes, programs, and responses to lectures given at churches, professional conferences (AAR, ASCH, AHS), and university functions.
Series 4: Publications (arranged alphabetically by folder title) These papers are comprised of drafts, notes, and reviews of published journal articles (such as JPCC and ASCH) and book reviews as well as solicitations from editors for contributions. Also included are topical and biographical entries written for various theological dictionaries and encyclopedias.
Series 5: Research (arranged both alphabetically and sequentially by folder title) These files hold undated biographical data on historical clergy and demographic information on the financial resources of American ministers prior to the Civil War. - Biographical/Historical Note:
- E. Brooks Holifield, Charles Howard Candler Professor Emeritus of American Church History in the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, earned his Ph.D. at Yale University. Upon graduating, he taught at Emory from 1969-2011. Distinguished in his field for his wide historical range of expertise and diverse methodologies, his research investigates the cultural, social, and religious convergence in American history. In addition to serving in the United Methodist Church as an ordained elder and frequent lecturer, he received the University Scholar-Teacher Award in 2010, selected by Emory faculty on behalf of The United Methodist Church Board of Higher Education and Ministry.
