- Biographical/Historical Note:
- The Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa is currently the most severe outbreak of Ebola in history. Widespread cases of the virus was seen in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, with limited cases reported in Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, which saw 11 total cases of Ebola in 2014. Three of the patients were treated in a special isolation unit in the Emory University Hospital and were subsequently released after an improvement of health. As of June 2015, the Ebola outbreak was officially declared ended in all reported countries except for Sierra Leone and Guinea.
