- Summary:
- This collection consists almost entirely of personal and family correspondence of James McKibbin Gage, a physician and horse breeder, born 28 July 1813. He was the son of John Gage (d. 1845); he had a brother, Robert I. Gage, and two sisters, Nancy and Mary Jane Gage. Topics discussed include the study and practice of medicine, inflation of cotton prices, horse breeding and racing, sectional and national politics, and local and family life. The collection also contains a poem, a printed drawing, and a sermon by an unknown author. Correspondents include his brother, Robert, his father, his brother-in-law, B. Frank Patton, and his friend, James E. Nott. James studied medicine in Paris and in Charleston, S.C. He lived in Union, S.C., during the summer and settled there permanently to practice medicine. He died in 1855 and was buried in Union, S.C.
