Description/Summary
- Summary:
- The Cherokee Phoenix, famed as the first American Indian newspaper to be published in the United States, has a long and fascinating history. Founded by the Tribal Council in 1828, it was first edited by Elias Boudinot (also known as Buck Watie), who christened the publication the Phoenix. Printed bilingually in both English and Cherokee syllabary, The Phoenix included articles on international news, general interest columns and extracts from popular literature. The Phoenix devoted much of its time to the issue of forced removal; in 1829 Georgia had extended its laws over Cherokee lands. Tensions would be charted in the pages of the newspapers, and in 1834, Georgia began attempts to shut down publication, successfully seizing the press the following year. The paper's legacy was continued, however, by the publication of the Cherokee Advocate in Tahlequah, Oklahoma in September 1844. Publishing rights were returned, finally, to the Cherokee government in 1973, and in the early 2000s the Cherokee Phoenix name was restored.
