Description/Summary
- Summary:
- Isaac Jarratt was a soldier in the War of 1812, landholder, merchant, and partner with Tyre Glen (d. 1875) in the slave trade between Montgomery, Ala., and Huntsville, N.C. His son, Isaac Augustus Jarratt (1841-1890), of Huntsville, Conrads, and Fayetteville, N.C., was a planter, merchant, and distiller. The younger Jarratt received an A.B. from the University of North Carolina in 1861 and served as a captain in Company C, 26th North Carolina Regiment of the Confederate Army, during the Civil War. The collection consists chiefly of family and business letters, 1832 to 1890, and a few financial, legal, and military documents pertaining to the Isaac Jarratt family of Surry (now Yadkin) County, N.C., and Montgomery, Ala. Early items primarily concern personal news of family and friends and a variety of business transactions, including land and slave purchases, debt settlements, and the purchase of a carriage in New York City, and travels through the Choctaw and Cherokee nations. Civil War era material consists of two 1864 military enrollment orders addressed to Captain Isaac A. Jarratt of the 26th North Carolina Regiment. Other items include an 1875 exchange of letters between the elder Jarratt and the federal pension office concerning his application for a pension as a veteran of the War of 1812; photocopies of birth and death records for slaves and former slaves of the Jarratt family from their Bible; photocopies of family records pertaining primarily to the Clingman family; a photocopy of a 1978 class paper about the "White House" of Yadkin County, N.C.; and a photocopy of a 1979 history of the Clingman, Puryear, and Jarratt families. Correspondents in the collection include R.C. Puryear; Tyre Glen and his son, George; L. Simpson; Josiah Cowles; I.R. Harris; Arthur A. Clingman; Betsey Ann of Huntsville, N.C.; and Tom.
