- Summary:
- Benjamin Leonard Covington (B.L.C.) Wailes was a plantation owner, geologist, and surveyor in Washington, Mississippi. He was known for his interest in natural phenomena in the region, particularly soils, rocks, plants, and animal life. In 1852, Wailes was appointed assistant professor of agriculture and geological sciences at the University of Mississippi. His diaries include scientific observations as well as many interesting entries about the functioning of a Mississippi plantation. Wailes' diaries contain many comments about the slave system on his plantation and the Civil War.
