- Summary:
- "This book combines insights from biological adaptation with a psychological analysis of the ways in which we identify problems, consider solutions, and take action. It presents a pathway forward by using scientific knowledge to support the choices involved in social organizing and decision-making processes. These processes are central to our adaptive strategy, and understanding and managing them will improve our chances for a sustainable future. The book describes the social organizing process and the conditions under which creative social organizing occurs and provides research-based ideas for managing this process in the context of sustainability. Industrial-organizational psychology and its related disciplines have been working to understand and manage decision making in a huge variety of social organizations for several decades now. The book focuses on how applied social scientists--especially psychologists--can help organize approaches to addressing this adaptive problem. It unapologetically argues for manipulation and control of human thinking and social behavior to save our future from our current selves. The book is a challenge to think differently about sustainability, incorporating an applied psychological perspective. It gets the reader thinking about positive change through a criterion-centric, social process approach. The book explores some of the social organizing dynamics that can change decision processes toward the broader perspective required for sustainability. It is written for scholars and students in environmental, applied, and evolutionary psychology, as well as a scholarly and advocacy audience in conservation, sustainability, and environmental studies."--Preface.
