Hemphill Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church and Center Street Methodist Episcopal Church merged and together they formed Payne Memorial Methodist Church in 1939. The first congregation to merge with St. James Methodist Church was Payne Memorial Methodist in 1951. St. James merged again with Warren A. Candler Methodist Episcopal Church also in 1951. After completing their merger, they began to search for new land to build a new congregation named Tenth Street United Methodist Church. The church was given the name after 10th Street where the building was located. In 2010, Underwood Memorial United Methodist Church merged with Tenth Street United Methodist Church forming Tenth Street Underwood Memorial United Methodist Church.
