- The collection consists of papers, photos, letters, unpublished manuscripts and other historic material regarding Jabari Simama's life including his education, writing, and work as a Council Member for the City of Atlanta's 3rd district from 1960-2016. Materials arrived sorted into major categories and include his youth and early higher education; writings and research starting with college work and dissertation through his time as a columnist at Creative Loafing and his published books, and his campaign and work with the Atlanta City Council (1987-1994). A significant portion of the Simama collection details his interest and experience with cable television and technology initiatives including his leadership in reviewing WPBA and WABE to conform with educational mission of APS, technology summits held while a councilmember and as an administrator at Benedict College, in his work under Atlanta mayors Shirley Franklin and Bill Campbell, and with the DeKalb County government. There are also materials from his time as a professor and in administration at higher education institutions as well as information about his company, Urban Contemporary Television, Inc., which produced recordings on significant community members, organizations, and locations like the Fulton County Arts Council, Hank Aaron, and Paschal's restaurant. A smaller amount of material includes Simama's work with the Washington Park neighborhood and on the Metro Atlanta Olympic Games committee as well as Nisha Simama's writing and her time as the at-large member of the Atlanta School Board in the early 1990s

- Jabari Simama, born in Columbia, Missouri, to Floyd "Button" Lewis, Jr. (d. 1974) and Ida Lewis (1928-2016) along with siblings Jill Lewis, Jarrell Lewis, Charlynn Lewis-Dawson, Jefferson Lewis, James Lewis, Marcelyn "Kay Lewis, and Joan Lewis. He is an African American educator, mass media specialist, journalist, and activist. Simama graduated from Hickman High School (Columbia, Missouri) in 1969 and attended Lincoln University (Jefferson City, Missouri) in 1969, before receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut) and his Master of Arts in African American Studies from Atlanta University (now, Clark Atlanta University) in Georgia (1975). Simama earned his Ph.D. from Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia), graduating from Emory's Institute for Liberal Arts in 1978. Simama married Nisha, an educator and school board member, in 1975 after meeting through Young Life. They have two daughters. Nisha Simama worked as a school counselor and social studies teacher at The Paideia School for over 20 years. Prior to that Simama served as the Executive Director of the largest Head Start program in the state of Georgia and was also the project administrator for a Head Start program for migrant farm workers in Georgia. She was also an assistant professor at Clark Atlanta University. In 2011, she was appointed to serve as an interim member of the Atlanta Board of Education having served on the Fulton County Board of Health and the Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center. She has also written and published on the subjects of race, gender, and urban education.
